Dear Mrs.Buchanan,
“McLellan Sensei”―the name I have cherished for very longtime. I have never thought the day would come when I can write a letter toSensei. This is just unbelievable. The picture of you with sun glasses smilingand standing holding a bouquet in Sensei’s arms on the pier of Kobe harbor hasbeen in my room for long time. Whenever I see this picture, I remembered myencounter with Sensei. As I have never thought I’ll be able to write to you, I’mnow just feeling as if I were in the dream. This is just a miracle.
Sensei, doyou remember my families? My father came back to Hinomoto as the vice principalfrom a short while retirement during the last war. We, my father, mother elderbrother and two younger brothers and myself were living at Gokenyashiki.
I oftenvisited the missionary’s pavilion made of duralumin. I still remember vividlythe turkey you served us on a Christmas day. It was the first time in our lifefor one of my brother and myself have ever seen the turkey. And the turkey didnot have either neck or face! We became just stiffened looking at it, and wedon’t remember whether we ate the turkey or not. So, we don’t know how ittasted, and we regret it very much.
The mostimportant memory I have in relation to Sensei is that I was given a chance tohelp the Sunday School which was being held in Sensei’s residence. My role isto call the roll and pray in Junior High School class. Perhaps Sensei gave methat role to encourage me because I had been baptized in Christmas only two yearsearlier. I still feel obliged for sensei’s warm consideration.
The BibleClass held in the Missionary’s Pavilion was just in the midst of our memorable adolescence. We prayed, learned and talked together with the students of Himeji West Hi-school,etc. That is my treasure.
To tell youthe truth, I went into Sensei’s bedroom and climbed on the bed. I found it quitebouncing, and I enjoyed it for a while just like the trampoline. It reallyenjoyed it very much. But I have to apologize for it.
My dear Sensei!
HelpingSunday School was a good experience, but I have to thank the S.S. for anotherreason. Your church or Miss. Hampton’s church sent us a fund for purchasing organ. We added the small contribution from the children to it and purchased a small baby-organ,and I was made in charge of playing in the S.S. Later I played for long time asthe kindergarten teacher and was a church organist, too. The small baby-organwas the starting point for my history as such. I am grateful very much for thebaby-organ.
Sensei, Iwant to see you so much!
May thisletter be in your hand as early as possible!
Yours verysincerely,
KazukoOhtsuka (graduated 1957)

To Mrs. Buchanan:
I knew Ueyama Taeko san from the kindergarten days.
The kindergarten was in the Watamachi Baptist Church, where my father was the pastor, before he became the principal of Himoto Jogakko.
We used to call each other "Tae-chan" and "Isaku-chan"
even when she was living in Vancouver, B.C.. Her husband's name is Arthur Naito, and we used to visit Arthur and Tae-chan
often from Seattle. They raised two children: a girl (Jun-chan)
and a boy (Charles).
It is sad that Tae-chan died relatively
young. For her funeral one sister came from Japan.

“Thank your for the letter from Kazuko san.I enjoyed it so much. Some of it I found amusing. I had no idea that she had checked out my bedroom with my bouncy bed, which she would not be used to. She became a useful member of the Sunday School and school with her ability to play organ. I remember her father well, as the vice president of Hinomoto all the time I was there.
